Sharpening Using the Free Online Calculator:
The Tradesman Edge System measures the clearance between the rail and the wheel (simple triangle), the most accurate and consistent way of setting knife bevels, eliminating numerous variables. The calculator is built in to the webpage, so once you have the page loaded, or if you can save it to your browser or device, it will continue to work offline
1. Enter desired bevel angle and grip length (from knife edge to collar of knife jig) into the calculator and it will give you the support clearance at which to set tool rest
2. Sharpening is simply taking a couple passes with a coarse belt, fine belt then stropping with the felt belt. Your cycle time of 60 seconds from dull to shaving-sharp, on a wide range of knife shapes and sizes
Using the 600 Grit Wheel: Two stage rough to hone
You may upgrade to the 600 grit diamond resin wheel instead of the contact wheel for $200. Cuttermasters diamond resin grinding wheels are state-of-the art for knife sharpening and are also available in 100 and 1000 grit. The 600 grit is meant to be a one-wheel-does-everything wheel: it roughs and finishes. Then you use the felt belt to debur, potentially reducing your cycle time by 33%
Precise and Repeatable Knife Apex Bevels
- The Tradesman Edge Apex and Apex S allow the operator to dial-in any knife bevel angle, using the calculator and graduated support rails, allowing for repeatable precision knife sharpening and honing, like no other
- It is the only grinder where the rail is precisely at the wheel spindle height --- blade is down, in front of the operator in an edge-trailing orientation
